Launch of the Situationist International Research Network (SIRN) - January 2025
We are happy to announce the official launch of the Situationist International Research Network (SIRN). SIRN is a network of academics and independent researchers working on the Situationist International and related topics. It seeks to provide news, information, contacts and other resources for people interested in undertaking or engaging with peer-reviewed research on the Situationists. Our goal is to facilitate international, interdisciplinary and multilingual collaboration between researchers and to promote peer-reviewed academic research on the Situationists to a wider audience.
This is the first of a quarterly newsletter that will provide information on recent and forthcoming publications, events of all kinds and other news on the SI and related subjects. To sign up to the newsletter, simply subscribe to this blog.

En mars 1965, une bombe éclate au domicile du peintre danois et membre de l’Internationale situationniste J. V. Martin. Disparaissent dans les flammes deux des œuvres de la série des Directives (1963) de Guy Debord, le fondateur de l’IS. Accident ou attentat ? Le climat d’agitation extrême autour des manœuvres de l’OTAN et des manifestations antinucléaires en Europe du Nord a-t-il été fatal aux Directives, œuvres d’art détournées en formes d’action pour « changer la vie » ? Ainsi débute l’enquête sur la puissance explosive des Directives, supports d’une alternative révolutionnaire au monde bipolarisé de la guerre froide.

Com crescentes casos de ataques a monumentos no passado recente, o tema da iconoclastia voltou a ser debatido. Mas a iconoclastia que testemunhamos hoje é de fato análoga àquela de períodos distantes no tempo, estudada por autores consagrados como Freedberg e Belting? A hipótese que procuro apresentar é a de que atravessamos um período de transformação epocal na relação com a imagem, e que o próprio conceito de imagem, subentendido de modo genérico à noção de iconoclastia, precisa ser repensado e historicizado. Para tanto, revisito rapidamente a iconoclastia de maio de 68, momento de emergência da sociedade do espetáculo, e proponho, em seguida, algumas indicações teóricas que podem nos ajudar a diferenciar a iconoclastia contemporânea.

Guy Debords revolutionäres Werk »Die Gesellschaft des Spektakels« (1967) hatte unmittelbaren Einfluss auf die Ereignisse des Mai 1968. Eric-John Russell vertieft die Analyse von Debord und Marx, indem er die zentrale Bedeutung von Hegels spekulativer Logik für beide aufzeigt. Mit der Verbindung von Debord und Hegel betritt die Kritische Theorie Neuland. Mit Hilfe von Debord untersucht Russell eine Theorie des Kapitalismus mit Bezug auf dessen Erscheinungen – hier ist die Welt wirklich, wie sie scheint. Diese spektakuläre Logik des Scheins veranschaulicht Debords Bedeutung für eine Theorie des Kapitalismus des 20. Jahrhunderts und formuliert eine neue Perspektive für die Kritische Theorie der Gesellschaft.
